Margarita Island
Margarita Island (Isla Margarita) is located off the North East Caribbean coast of Venezuela and is indeed a Venezuelan island, with a close and long association with Spain it comes as no surprise that Spanish is the native language and the currency of Margarita as per the rest of Venezuela being the Bolivar. Margarita Island has a rich history dating back to the early 15th century when it was discovered by Christopher Columbus. Margarita Island is one of the three islands, which forms the state of Nueva Esparta with the capital of the state being La Asunción, which is located on Margarita. Margarita Island is by far the largest and most developed of the three islands, Coche and Cubagua being the other two islands which go to make up the state of Nueva Esparta.
Margarita Island (which means 'pearl' this is why its commonly referred to as the pearl of the Caribbean) has a yearly average temperature of around 28c with little humidity (perfect in many respects) with little rainfall and possibly most importantly of all being the most southerly of the Caribbean islands Margarita Island is out of the hurricane belt which is a very important consideration when looking to possibly live and purchase overseas property in the Caribbean.
Porlamar
is the largest city and the commercial hub of the island. Here you will
find numerous shops, bars, restaurants and banks. The main attraction is
the very impressive ‘Sambil’ shopping complex (Mall). Here you
can shop to your hearts content in designer shops, such as Tommy Hilfiger,
Timberland, Dexter, Dolce & Vita, plus many many more, and all, duty
free! You will also find banks and restaurants offering all types of cuisine,
as well as bars and a very modern cinema, offering all the latest “blockbusters”.
Margarita Island has numerous beach’s, the most popular is ‘Playa
El Agua’ in the northern part of the island. It is about 4km long
with fine sand, and has lots of restaurants and bars along its length. In
this northern part you can also find Margarita Island’s only 18 hole
golf course but another is currently being constructed. Other well-known
beaches are Playa Caribe (north of Juangriego), Playa Guacuco, Playa Manzanillo,
and the windsurfing beach at El Yaque.
