Mpumalanga South Africa
Mpumalanga, the place of the ‘rising sun’ is one of South Africa’s top tourist destinations. With its capital and gateway being Nelspruit which is about 4hrs drive East of Johannesburg. Nelspruit is a friendly commercial city set in lush surroundings. The streets are lined with jacaranda and flamboyant trees and the city boasts excellent sporting facilities. From Nelspruit good roads radiate to the game reserves of the Lowveld, (pronounced lowfelt) the mountains and the historic towns.
Kruger National Park Mpumalanga
The Mpumalanga province consists of two sharply contrasting types of scenery – Mpumalanga has dramatic topography, that of the escarpment and that of the bush of the Lowveld where you find the world famous Kruger National Park.
Visitors are drawn by the magnificent scenery, by the fauna and flora and by the saga of the 1870’s gold rush era and a wealth of fascinating tribal legends. Aptly know as “Paradise Country” few regions in the world can match the extraordinary beauty of the Lowveld and escarpment. Mountains, panoramic passes, valleys, rivers, waterfalls and forests characterise the landscape.
The Blyde River Canyon, on the escarpment, is one of the greatest natural features in Southern Africa. It is the 3rd largest canyon in the world and the largest green canyon. Prospectors combed the area during the late 19th century gold rush. Visitors are transported back to those days in the village of Pilgrim’s Rest, a living museum dating back to the heydays of the gold rush.
