Ancient Nessebur is connected to the Bulgarian mainland via a small 400m narrow isthmus. Nessebur is one of Bulgaria's most ancient towns and dates back some 3000 years in history. A preservation order protects the old quarter as a living museum town, housing the remains of some 40 churches from different periods of Nessebur's history.
